Abstract:
This experimental study investigates the impact of cultural relativism on attitudes towards corporal punishment amongst parents and teachers in Lagos, Nigeria. Despite Nigeria's ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), corporal punishment remains prevalent. This study examines how cultural relativism influences perceptions of corporal punishment and compliance with human rights standards. A mixed-methods approach combines survey questionnaires (n=400) and focus group discussions (n=12). Participants include parents and teachers from public and private schools in Lagos. The study employs a pre-test, post-test, control group design. The intervention includes culturally sensitive human rights education and awareness materials. The Result of the study show that Cultural relativism significantly influences attitudes towards corporal punishment. Human rights education reduce support for corporal punishment by teachers in schools due to fear of sanctions. Education level and socio-economic status cannot withstand the pressure of cultural values which significantly influence attitudes towards corporal punishment
