Artificial Intelligence (AI) has proven to be a game-changer in several domains of human pursuits, especially in academic research where its potential to automate tasks, handle extensive datasets, and augment decision-making has been put to use. This study focused on how AI can foster innovation in academic research and be used to enhance research methods, better analyse data, and encourage collaboration across disciplines. The paper examined the ethical challenges presented by the use of AI in academic research, such as algorithmic bias, concerns with data privacy, transparency issues, and the black-box nature or opacity of AI systems. The study drew from the existing literature and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) framework, suggesting that AI can be a powerful tool for enhancing knowledge production and research efficiency while adhering to ethical considerations and responsible governance. The paper argued that AI should be used as an aid, not a replacement, to human creativity, critical thinking and ethical reasoning. The study, therefore recommended that the transformative promise of AI can only be realised through responsible use that is transparent, fair, inclusive, and accountable, and that values the integrity of academic and research processes. As such, it called for the development and promotion of "human-centred AI frameworks" that focus on explainability, ethical accountability, data privacy and transparency, both in the academic and industry sectors.
