This study examined digital transformation and organisational restructuring at The Guardian, with particular attention to structural changes, the perceived organisational costs and economic consequences of restructuring, and the prospects associated with continuing digital transformation. Anchored on the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, the study adopted a qualitative case-study design and drew data from in-depth interviews with six purposively selected senior personnel occupying strategic editorial, managerial, financial, human-resource and technological positions within The Guardian. Interview data were subjected to thematic analysis. Findings revealed that digital transformation has moved beyond the digitisation of newspaper content to produce substantive organisational changes, including the institutionalisation of a dedicated digital operation, integration of multiple publishing platforms, development of an e-paper and online television service, adoption of remote working arrangements and creation of new strategic leadership functions. Although participants could not provide an aggregate monetary value for the restructuring, their accounts indicated substantial initial investment accompanied by longer-term operational savings and emerging digital revenue opportunities. The findings further showed that The Guardian's sustainability strategy increasingly rests on continuous technological adaptation, platform diversification and organisational flexibility. The study concludes that digital transformation in legacy newspapers is fundamentally an organisational process rather than merely a technological transition. The study contributes context-specific evidence from Nigeria to scholarship on newsroom digitalisation by demonstrating how technological adoption can progressively reshape organisational structures, work routines and sustainability strategies in a legacy newspaper. As recommendation, the study posited that any newspaper organisation in Nigeria that is serious about sustaining its business should closely examine the current structure of The Guardian and adapt them to its own peculiarities.
